{A1706 / EMC 3071}—Released in June 2017, this 13" Macbook Pro features Kaby Lake processors up to 3.5 GHz Core i7 with Turbo Boost up to 4.0 GHz.

MBP suddenly stopped charging Ventura 13.7.6

MacBook Pro

MacBookPro14,2

Dual-Core Intel Core i7

3.5 GHz

13-inch Touchbar, 2017, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports

Ventura 13.7.6

iFixit battery fitted in March 2023 and has worked fine up until the release of Venture 13.7.6 when I noticed that the battery wasn't charging over 29%. Said it was but never increased.

Back in 2023 it had said "battery needs replacement" so I did, and all worked fine until recently. MBP sits on charge more than its actually used on battery these days. Normally I would have all the optimisation settings set. They are currently turned off

tried all manor of SMC, PRAM, Safe Mode boots etc. Various chargers, currently using the shipped Apple one that came with it....all have the same effect, very little or next to nothing

9 Charge Cycles

Low Power Mode is disabled

Battery Health 103.6%

in the last hours I've managed to bump it from 29% to a whopping 34.2%

by changing charging ports everytime I notice that the CHARGING WITH has dropped to 0 mW in coconut battery.

Any tips? solutions? experience of similar issue

...TIA

Update (06/05/25)

so after two hours unplugged, the temp isn't down by much...

discharge screenshot was without PSU attached,

charging was immediate after connecting Apple PSU

....right now its dropped to charging with 5.0W, but little change to the percentage of 38.1% at this point

Can you install CoconutBattery App and take a snapshot of the Apps main window posting it here so we can see.

by

@danj done, thanks

@havinabubble - Good! So it's now charging as the batteries temp is lower, but still high. Do you live in a hot climate? What is your rooms Temp?

Also I think you need to dig into the systems cooling a bit here as well. Here's a good App for that TG Pro post a snapshot of it when the charger stops charging and hopefully the battery is more charged.

Both the age of the Battery and the cycle count shows this battery is about three years old, it's possible your use pattern may have affected its expected life. What is the primary use of the system? Heavy graphics kind of activity games, video editing and rendering, CAD or other object image work with sizable number of objects or web with lots of open tabs or active windows.

sadly not, same as before...

begins and pretty much stops a few moments later.

Change port and it starts again for a tiny period and then stops {repeat}

I'm trying a clean install of the system today to see if that sorts the issue

downgraded to CATALINA, did a format & clean install.

Had no initial effect

Then ran the battery completely down from 49%

started today with a flurry of charging ..1..2..3..4..10..15..20..thought I was onto a winner! got to 24% and its all come to a halt again :-(

It does look like the battery is trying to charge while it's too hot. Shut down the system fully give it a good two hours and try charging the system again then snap a fresh capture after a few minutes as it does take Coconut a bit of time to get the update. Let's see what that tells us.
